Immunizations
The Occupational Health Program (OHP) offers immunizations to County employees when these are required by Cal/OSHA regulations, or when recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (C.D.C.) for high risk occupational groups.
(Note: the following information does not apply to the Department of Health Services which is subject to State special regulations).
Hepatitis B:
| This immunization series is available from OHP contractors to employees who may reasonably be anticipated to have physical contact with blood or saliva, such as Firefighters, Coroners, and Deputy Sheriffs, as required by Cal/OSHA. The immunization series must be provided within the context of a complete program that includes an educational component for employees to ensure compliance and appropriate training.

Hepatitis A: |
OHP offers this vaccine to County employees traveling (on County business) to countries that have high rates of hepatitis A. Since there has not been a case of Hepatitis A due to contaminated water exposure within the U.S. in over 20 years, this vaccine is not necessary per the C.D.C. for sewage workers or life guards who may have to enter sewage contaminated water. |

|
Tetanus: |
This is not offered by OHP, since it is recommended for all adults every 10 years regardless of occupation. Therefore, all employees should obtain this immunization during routine preventive medicine visits to their private health care providers. |

Varicella: |
Based on recommendations from the C.D.C., our office is currently offering this vaccine to non-immune Coroner employees who have direct contact with corpses. Per the C.D.C, vaccination is not necessary for persons who have had chicken pox or shingles anytime in the past, were born in the U.S. before 1980, or who have been vaccinated anytime in the past. |
