Celebrating Native American Heritage Month
On October 22, 2024, the Board of Supervisors (Board) adopted the motion, Proclaiming November 2024 as Native American Heritage Month, and recognizes November 2024 as Native American Heritage Month, honoring the history, cultures, and contributions of Native American communities.
The proclamation celebrates the First Peoples of the region, including the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh, and Chumash, whose ancestral lands we inhabit, as well as the region’s American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) population, comprised of members from more than 200 tribes.
This month emphasizes education, reflection, and appreciation for the cultural practices, languages, and leadership of Native Americans. It highlights resilience and creativity, drawing attention to the enduring impact of First Peoples on society and the need to preserve their heritage and narratives.
