Celebrating Women’s History Month
Join Los Angeles County this March as we celebrate Women’s History Month! Women’s History Month was first celebrated in the City of Sonoma, California,
through a weeklong event beginning in 1978. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. In 1987, Congress expanded this observance, declaring March as National Women’s History Month in perpetuity. Since then, Women’s History Month has been observed annually to honor the contributions of women to our communities, culture, and society.
Be sure to tune in to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting tomorrow, March 3, 2026, to learn more about the motion, Women’s History Month March 2026, put forth by Supervisor Solis.
As we observe Women’s History Month, Los Angeles County reaffirms its commitment to honoring the achievements of women and advocating for policies that protect their rights. Women’s leadership, resilience, and contributions have shaped our communities, strengthened our economy, and enriched our culture. By celebrating their accomplishments and supporting their participation at every level, we continue to build a community in which women are empowered to lead, thrive, and shape a better future for all.
Throughout the month of March, various events and celebrations are taking place across LA County. We encourage you to make a plan to participate in the activities taking place throughout the County including LA County Library’s Women’s History Month programming and other highlighted events below.
