On July 8, 2025, the Board of Supervisors formally appointed Sarah Mahin as the first Director of the Department of Homeless Services and Housing. Read the full announcement here.
On April 1, 2025, the Board of Supervisors approved a motion establishing the County’s first ever department on homelessness. On July 1, 2025, the Board of Supervisors approved the new department name of LA County Department of Homeless Services and Housing.
The driving force behind this new department is increasing accountability, streamlining bureaucracy to stretch our dollars further, and improving care for people experiencing homelessness.

The Chief Executive Office (CEO) Homeless Initiative (HI) and Department of Health Services (DHS) Housing for Health (HFH) align and integrate work while developing implementation plans for the administrative functions of the new County department

Complete integration of specified services currently administered by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) into the new department
